Zulu King’s Confidant Assassinated After eNyokeni Reed Dance
On Saturday night, a senior member of the Osuthu royal council was assassinated shortly after returning home from the contested annual Zulu reed dance at Nongoma’s eNyokeni palace.
Dr Dumisani Khumalo, the assassinated council member, was a confidant of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini, and he assisted the current king, Misuzulu KaZwelithini, in taking the throne from his rival, Prince Simakade.

During the mourning for the late king’s death at KwaKhethomthandayo palace in March last year, Khumalo was the one who welcomed male mourners at the large marquee pitched outside the palace’s gates.
Among those he welcomed was the EFF’s leadership, led by party leader Julius Malema.

Khumalo had continued to be used for royal duties, and King Misuzulu had relied on him for wise counsel and direction on how some duties and rituals should be performed, including the ritual of entering the sacred royal kraal, which was performed last month.

The motive for the murder is currently unknown.
However, it is widely known that KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube was warned of the possibility of “bloodshed” if the reed dance was permitted to take place at the palace. Some members of the royal court believe it is the seat of power for Prince Simakade, who is still vying for the throne.
Khumalo is known as Iso leSilo (a headman assigned by the king to oversee certain affairs) in the traditional Zulu royal organogram, and he was one of the first few people to stand behind King Misuzulu when the fight for the Zulu throne erupted in late April last year.
According to SurgeZirc SA, King Misuzulu has yet to be formally notified of the assassination. The royal office will issue a press statement once he has been informed.
