The incident follows a horrific truck accident on Friday that killed 19 learners and two adults in a bakkie when a truck overtook another truck on the N2 and collided head on with the bakkie.

Outraged community members, who claim to have been calling for intervention over unruly truck drivers for years, have been shutting down sections of the N2 since Friday, demanding justice.

Trucks have used the R34 as an alternate route since the closure. The N2 and R34 are popular routes for coal trucks traveling from Middelburg, Mpumalanga, to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT).

The truck driver involved in the Pongola crash initially fled the scene but surrendered to authorities over the weekend.

He appeared in the Pongola magistrate’s court on Monday, where the court prohibited the media from photographing him due to safety concerns.

The man, who is facing 21 counts of culpable homicide, intends to seek bail, which the state is expected to oppose.
