The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) has confirmed one person’s death in Tembisa as a result of violent service delivery protests.

According to a local, the man was caught in the crossfire between Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers and protesters.

Parts of Tembisa have been completely shut down, with protestors blocking the roads with rocks and burning tyres. They want Ekurhuleni Mayor Tania Campbell to come to the area for a meeting.

Protesters in large numbers have gathered on Tembisa’s streets, demanding that the mayor of Ekurhuleni meet with them. Cleopatra Mthethwa, a protester, stated that she could not afford the rates and electricity.

She has blamed Mayor Campbell for the escalation of the protests. Meanwhile, Tembisa is engulfed in smoke in the vicinity of the customer service center.

Officers are dispersing crowds with rubber bullets fired from police vans, trucks, and a chopper.
