Grade 9 Learner Commits Suicide After Teacher Used His Sexuality To Bully Him

A grade 9 student from Soweto’s PJ Simelane Secondary School who committed suicide will be laid to rest on Thursday morning.

Tiro Moalusi, fifteen, died last Tuesday after a teacher allegedly mocked him about his sexuality in front of the class.

When it was his turn to present his speech, his Setswana teacher is said to have called Moalusi ‘Sis bhuti,’ which means sissy boy, in front of other learners.

It’s said that Moalusi attempted to discuss the situation with the teacher, but was reprimanded.

According to the family, Tiro Moalusi returned home with no signs of distress from what happened at school.

He later told his aunt what had happened and then threw  up. According to Khosa, her nephew died as a result of the unfortunate comment. They rushed him to the Leratong Hospital, where he later passed on.They rushed him to the Leratong Hospital, where he later passed on.

“We as a family know that Tiro was gay. He was our gay and we had long accepted and loved him the way he was. But to be shamed by a teacher became too much for him,” Khosa said.

Moalusi’s family, fellow pupils, and friends will gather on Thursday morning at his home in Tshepisong to bid him farewell.
