Floyd Shivambu: “Marikana Massacre One Of The Reasons ANC Must And Will Die”

Floyd Shivambu, deputy president of the EFF, has commented on the 10-year anniversary of the Marikana massacre, saying it will be one of the reasons the ANC dies.

The anniversary of the deaths of 34 mineworkers shot by police at Marikana during a protest for higher pay and better living conditions falls between August 12 and 16.

The massacre occurred in 2012 at the Lonmin platinum mine, when mineworkers were demanding a monthly minimum wage of R12,500.

When negotiations between workers and management came to a halt, workers went on strike, and the ensuing violence left a massive mark on the country, drawing comparisons to the 1960 Sharpeville massacre.

As the nation commemorates the massacre’s anniversary, Shivambu says it’s time for the ruling party to “die.”

“We haven’t forgotten that the ANC government under the influence and instruction of global capitalist greed and [President Cyril] Ramaphosa killed workers in Marikana 10 years ago. The massacre of workers in Marikana is one of the reasons why the ANC must and will die,” claimed Shivambu.

Survivors and families are still waiting for justice ten years after the tragic event. Families of the miners who were killed sued the state and Ramaphosa for the massacre.

Last week, Solicitor-General Fhedzisani Pandelani stated that the state-victim litigation would be completed by the end of the month. Pandelani stated that half of the 48 claims had been resolved, and that more would be by the end of the month.

“Matters like these should not be delayed inordinately. Delivery issues which make the state liable need to be dealt with [as soon as possible],” he said.

Many users on social media echoed Shivambu’s statement, pointing out that Ramaphosa has yet to visit Marikana and publicly apologize to the families and victims.

Ramaphosa made the promise at the funeral of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in 2014.
