18 Patients Evacuated As Fire Engulfs Parts Of Steve Biko Academic Hospital Overnight

A fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, affecting temporary structures.

Kwara Kekana, a spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, said the cause of the fire was unknown at this time.

There were no injuries among the patients or the staff. The fire destroyed temporary structures at the hospital and was extinguished by hospital personnel. As a precaution, one body and 18 patients in separate temporary structures near where the fire broke out had to be moved to other areas of the hospital.

“The fire broke out at around 1.20 am in a Wendy house used as a temporary storage area for Covid-19 medical waste and transit corpse area,” she said.

According to Kekana, it also affected a special temporary isolation unit and a triage tent for patients under investigation. She stated that the affected structures were located outside of the hospital’s casualty area.
